Artificial Intelligence, metacognition and personalisation: the EduIA project to address school dropout

Abstract
School dropout represents a complex challenge that requires innovative teaching strategies. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a promising tool to personalize learning and promote the development of metacognitive skills. This contribution explores the integration of AI, metacognition, and personalized teaching as fundamental elements for an engaging and stimulating learning environment. The paper presents a project that involves the use of EduIA, an application designed to support teaching that is currently being tested in four Sicilian upper secondary schools. The experimentation includes a preliminary phase to investigate teachers’ opinions on the challenges of using AI in teaching, a training course dedicated to the teachers involved, with tools specifically developed for process evaluation, and a final phase to collect opinions from teachers and students about the experience.
