Ridícula y malvada: la caracterización exasperada de la ideología de género en el blog de Padre Trevijano

Abstract

Gender ideology represents a challenge for the Catholic Church, as it threatens not only the solidity of its moral principles but also its latent power in society. To defend itself against this threat, since the 1990s, religious sectors, in collaboration with neoconservatives, have been developing discourses aimed at delegitimising opponents by portraying them as malevolent and dangerous entities. Within this framework, the present article proposes a linguistic–discursive study of Father Trevijano’s blog, which is particularly interesting for the way the speaker manipulates opposing positions to ridicule them and/or exacerbate their supposed wickedness. The study is based on pragmatic linguistics (Fuentes Rodríguez 2017[2020]), critical discourse analysis (van Dijk 2006 and 2010) and argumentation theory (Anscombre and Ducrot 1994) with its grammar (Lo Cascio 1991 and 2009; Fuentes Rodríguez and Alcaide Lara 2002). From a theoretical standpoint, the analysis follows the work of Morán Faúndes (2023) on the dismissive construction of gender ideology and the characterisation of its supporters as “total enemies” in the original writings of neoconservatives and Catholics.
