Abstract

The group discussed the roles of colors in cell architecture visualization and concluded that colors can be used as ontology. A color ontology highlights the notions in knowledge as a tree-like structure so that the relation of the notions and the hierarchic structure are clarified. The meaning of cell architecture vi- sualization can be considered as a kind of encoding-decoding communication model between a writer and a reader through a picture with palettes (textures) and a symbolic color such as “a microtubule is green”. In the framework, color ontology plays an essential role in reducing the complexity of images with re- gards to information entropy; high in grayscale, low in black/white, and colored in the middle
