ALGORITHM-AIDED FREE FORM ANAMORPHOSIS DESIGN

Abstract

The study investigates the topic of anamorphosis, an original geometric procedure, through which it is possible to represent figures on surfaces making their projections intelligible, only when observed from a particular point of view, chosen in advance by the author designer. In particular, the contribution focuses on the elaboration of a geometric methodology for the application of 'catoptric' anamorphosis, a specific typology, which, as it is known, requires the additional presence of reflective devices, which allow the deformed image to be interpreted. It is noted that, throughout history, this technique has been mainly used on reflective surfaces with simple and small geometries. To extend the use of the phenomenon on complex free-form geometric surfaces, it emerges that traditional geometric methods limit the design and control of the results, reducing the desired effect. A generalizable design approach, defined by algorithmic-parametric procedures, is, therefore, proposed to generate deformed images. In order to better express the perceptual impact of the observer and to validate the path initiated, explanatory cases are presented.
