Abstract
The figure of Pierangelo Garegnani (Milan 1930 – Lavagna 2011) is mainly known among economists and historians of economic thought as a purely theoretical economist. Since he was the main Sraffian student, his proximity to the leftist economists and the heterodox world is well-known. Nevertheless, only a very limited number of biographical papers exist about the whole Garegnani life and his political commitment. this chapter aims to start filling this gap, by shedding light on some neglected aspects of Garegnani’s biography, thanks to new documental evidences from his personal archive, other archival documents and oral sources. His political ‘critical closeness’ to the Italian Communist Party and his strong interest towards many sides of the Italian and international political and economic policy debates emerge as long term characteristics of Garegnani’s biography.
