PhD project title and a short abstract

Educ@re - A vertical Civic Education Curriculum from a Media Education perspective

The Educ@re project aims to integrate Civic Education with Media Education to support teachers’ professional development and promote students’ citizenship competencies. It adopts an action-research methodology involving teachers in the co-construction of the curriculum.

The research goal of designing and experimenting with a Civic Education Curriculum from a Media Education perspective is based on the convergence of three main theoretical fields: a) the thematic areas (Constitution, Sustainable Development, and Digital Citizenship) outlined in the Guidelines for Civic Education issued by the Italian Ministry of Education and Merit in 2020 and 2024; b) the EU concept of citizenship (as democratic action, social responsibility, effective and constructive interaction, critical thinking); c) media education as a “media-centered teaching and learning process” to raise awareness about media as representations of reality that contribute to the construction of social systems, values, and constructs, and develop younger generations’ critical thinking and media production as a form of civic engagement.

The project entails: literature review on Civic and Media Literacy Education with a comparative focus on European curricula; design of a curricular framework; training of participating teachers and co-design of lesson plans; classroom experimentation with qualitative and quantitative monitoring tools; analysis of school policies on Civic Education; development of a scalable and replicable evidence-based curriculum model integrating Media Literacy Education into school curriculum.
