PhD project title and a short abstract

From burnout to the educating community. For pedagogical teacher education

Many psychological and pedagogical studies have highlighted that the relational and care work of teaching is closely linked to the risk of burnout. The research focuses on the potential pedagogical reshaping of the psychological concept of burnout, within a hermeneutical-phenomenological framework. This approach aims to understand the relationship between “explanation” and “understanding” of educational phenomena. More specifically, the research explores the impact of the changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on the burnout levels and job satisfaction of secondary school teachers in the province of Palermo. To study teacher burnout and possible preventive and training interventions from a pedagogical perspective, an exploratory survey based on a mixed-methods approach was developed. The qualitative and quantitative data provided stepwise analysis, moving from a psychological explanation to a proper pedagogical understanding. The researcher intends to develop the psychological concept of “job engagement” - as opposed to burnout - into pedagogical categories - such as generativity, community, and vocation - in order to configure a theoretical framework on which to base interventions aimed at reducing the risk of burnout and promoting a more tailored teacher education.
