Graduated in Civil Engineering cum laude in 1986 at the University of Palermo she begins her research  activities at the Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering. Ph.D in Structural Engineering in 1992 at the University of Naples "Federico II". Assistant Professor at the University of Palermo since 1994. Associate Professor of Structural Engineering since 1998. Full Professor since 2004 at DICAM, University of Palermo.

She teaches Structural Analysis and Design to Civil Engineering students and Structural Problems of Historical Monuments and Buildings to Building Engineering’s students.

She is the Coordinator of the Master Degree in Building Engineering at the University of Palermo, since 2015.

She is author of many scientific publications mainly concerning the following fields of research: linear and nonlinear analysis of multi-storey seismic space framed systems; verification of seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings and historical monuments; problems of reinforcement and/or consolidation of masonry elements with the use of FRP; bond problems in concrete structures; ductility of columns subjected to cyclic loading, fiber reinforced concrete, seismic behavior of hybrid steel trussed concrete beams.

She has been Coordinator of the PhD School in Structural Engineering at the University of Palermo from 2008 to 2012; she is member of the Academic Committee since 1998 of the same PhD School, currently named PhD School in Materials, Environmental and Civil Engineering.

With reference to the covered research topics, she is: - the person in charge of many Conventions and Research Projects; - member of Commissions at the High Council of Public Works  (Italian Ministerial Body) to issue opinion on new materials for use in constructions; - Deputy Director of the Center for the study of the historical centers (CIRCES) of the University of Palermo.

She is reviewer of several international journals including: Materials and Structures, Journal of Composites for Construction ASCE, Journal of Structural Engineering ASCE, Cement and Concrete Composites, Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Construction and Building Materials, Engineering Structures.

She is member of several scientific associations including the College of Engineers of Construction Industrialization (CTE), the Italian Association of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete (AICAP), the Italian National Association of Earthquake Engineering (ANIDIS), National University Consortium of Materials Science and Technology (INSTM).
