Officer Elections and Duties

The resident component house of delegates gathers annually at the national meeting of the ASA in October of each year. During the residents component house of delegates meeting, elections are held to fill the following positions on the resident component governing council: Chair-elect, alternate-delegateand secretary. Because the duties of these positions may not be clear to all resident members, the responsibilities of these positions are outlined below.

Chair

The ASA resident component chair assumes the responsibilities of the office immediately following the ASA annual meeting. These responsibilities include running the annual ASA resident component House of Delegates meeting (held in conjunction with the ASA annual meeting) and leading the meetings of the resident component governing council, which meets in March and August. In addition to these formal leadership rules, the chair also serves to organize communication between the resident component governing council and residency programs.

Chair-Elect

Following election as chair-elect , this individual becomes familiar with the duties of the chair. Additionally, the chair-elect often undertakes special projects as assigned by the chair. Following the one year term as chair elect, the individual holding this office assumes the position of chair of the governing council for the following year.

Delegate

The individual who assumes this position serves as the representative of the Resident Component to the American Medical Association Resident Physicians Section House of Delegates, which meets in December and June each year. Additionally, this person represents the ASARC as an ex officio member of the ASA Board of Directors. Finally, the delegate also represents the resident component as a voting member of the ASA House of Delegates.

Alternate Delegate

During the first year of this term the Alternate Delegate becomes familiar with the role of delegate and attends all meetings with the current delegate. The position is similar to the chair-elect in that this individual will assume the position of delegate at the conclusion of the ASA national meeting.

Secretary

The individual elected to this office is responsible for the writing and distribution of the minutes of all meetings of the resident component governing council and the resident component house of delegates.

These descriptions serve as general guidelines for those who may be considering running for a resident component governing council office. They are certainly not all inclusive, however. Please feel free to contact any of the current governing council members to obtain more information about their positions or direct your inquiries to. Ronald A Bruns, ESQ. ASA Executive office.
