The Dean
Director of the Doctoral School: Prof. Antonina Pirrotta
The Director is a full-time, tenured full-time professor at the University of Palermo, appointed by the Rector, meeting the requirements set forth in Article 4, paragraph 3 of Ministerial Decree 226/2021. Should the appointed Director serve as Doctoral Coordinator, the appointment will result in his or her removal from this role and the consequent application of Article 5, paragraph 4 of Ministerial Decree 226 of December 14, 2021.
The Director's term of office is three years and may be renewed consecutively only once. The rules on incompatibilities set forth in Article 10, paragraphs 8 and 9 of the Statute apply to the role of Director of the School.
The Director:
- represents the School in institutional relations;
- coordinates the School's activities;
- convenes and chairs the Council and signs the minutes of its meetings;
- convenes and chairs the Reference Advisory Committee and signs the minutes of its meetings;
- appoints a Deputy Director to represent him in his absence or incapacity;
- may delegate specific tasks to members of the Board.
The Council
The Doctoral School Council is composed of:
a) the Director, who serves as President;
b) the Coordinators of the Doctoral Programs with administrative headquarters at the University of Palermo;
c) the University representatives for the programs under agreement or consortium with administrative headquarters other than the University, designated by the Teaching Committee;
d) five doctoral students elected from among all doctoral students, one for each of the five macro-areas referred to in Article 15 of the Statute;
e) the Vice-Rectors for Research, Teaching, and Third Mission.
The Director may invite officials responsible for the matters discussed to attend meetings.
The Council:
- contributes to the definition of the Doctoral Program's policy guidelines;
- may propose any amendments to the Doctoral Program Regulations and these Regulations to the University's governing bodies;
- decides on the use of any resources available to the School;
- defines and coordinates multi- and interdisciplinary teaching activities for the Doctoral Programs;
- may propose, also based on consultation with the Reference Advisory Committee, any amendments to the standard templates and the texts of the conventions and consortium agreements for the establishment of new Programs;
- establishes permanent or temporary working groups within the Council to address issues of specific interest.
The Reference Advisory Committee
It is the School's advisory body and is chaired by the School's Director.
The Committee is a forum structured by thematic areas and composed of qualified individuals from outside the University and belonging to the industrial, social, economic, and cultural contexts, appointed by the Rector, also upon recommendation by the Coordinators.
The Reference Advisory Committee is renewed or reconfirmed every three years.
The Reference Advisory Committee has the role of:
- supporting the School's Management in understanding the demand for researchers and research from the local and international economic, industrial, and academic contexts, in order to improve and strengthen the training program for the Doctoral Programs;
- proposing initiatives related to the Doctoral School;
- contributing to the promotion of the Doctoral Programs;
- contributing to the connection between the Doctoral School and the local, national, and international production system, including by encouraging collaboration with businesses and public and private entities that conduct research and innovative development;
- work to find additional financial resources to support the activities of the School's Doctoral Programs.
Commissions and working groups
1) Communication
- a) Definition of the School's visual identity, through the development of content for websites dedicated to promoting its courses.
- Promotion of the doctoral program through events and opportunities for both internal and external audiences, such as the inaugural ceremonies for the doctoral year and the awarding of diplomas to male and female PhDs.

3) Fundraising and Relations with Third Parties Committee
- Develop a communication plan outside the University, particularly towards the non-academic sector, to increase the visibility of the Doctorate and opportunities for funding and exchange between the academic and non-academic sectors.
- Establish a UniPA PhD Alumni/Alumnae association.
