(1964) - On July 14, 1989, he earned the “Laurea” degree (Master's degree) in Electrical Engineering (cum laude and with honors) from the University of Palermo, Italy. For the research on grounding systems simulation reported in his master’s thesis, he won an award from the National Telecommunications Corporation (now TIM S.p.A.) and a prize from a local Public Administration Office.

From December 1989 to December 1990, he complies with military service obligations.

From November 1990 to October 1993, he attends the University of Palermo as a PhD student. In 1994 he earnt the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Sciences) from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).

From 1992 to 1996 he was a teacher in the permanent staff of the Italian Technical High Schools. In 1997 he worked as an Energy Engineer in the Municipal Gas Company in Palermo. Then he joined the University of Palermo, where he was appointed as a University Researcher from 1997 to 2004 and as an Associate Professor from January 1, 2005, to December 29, 2020.

On April 7, 2017 he attains the National Scientific Qualification for the role of full Professor in Electrical Engineering - SC 09/E1.

Since December 30, 2020, he has been enrolled as a full professor in Electrical Engineering - SC 09/E1, at the "Dipartimento di Ingegneria" of the University of Palermo.

He is currently the scientific representative of the research unit of Palermo of the national ElecTrical Engineering group (ET).

He is a member of the Commission for the National Scientific Qualification - ASN - 2021-2023, SC 09/E1 - Electrical Engineering.

Since 1999 he has been teaching Fundamental of Circuit Theory, Fundamental of Electrical Engineering, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Numerical Modelling in Electrical Engineering, for many students in several undergraduate and graduate courses (i.e., Electronic Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Information Technology&Telecommunication Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering), and also for PhD students.

He is currently the deputy Head of the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo, October 17, 2022 - October 31, 2024.

He has been the coordinator of the master's degree course in Electrical Engineering at the University of Palermo for the academic three-year period 2019/2022.

From 2008 to 2011 he was the director of the undergraduate course in Electrical Engineering at the University of Palermo (didactic pole of Caltanissetta).

He has been the tutor of several PhD students and postdoctoral MIUR fellows, the mentor of several master degree thesis, the mentor of many students in internships in various industrial companies. Member of several PhD and postdoctoral committees at various italian University.

He is a member of the national committee of Consiglio Universitario Nazionale - CUN” for the evaluation of associate professors activity in 2014. He is a member of the national committee of “Consiglio Universitario Nazionale - CUN” for the evaluation of university researchers activity in 2014-2015.

He has been the principal local investigator of the national (MIUR-PRIN 2008-2011) research project on "Innovative electrical transportation system diagnostics - Partial discharge detection in electronic converters for automotive electrical motor drives".

He was the scientist in charge of the engineering section of the research unit of Palermo (coordinated by prof. G. Caruso medical doctor) of the national research project (MIUR-PRIN 2012, in medical area) on “New discoveries in searching for a cure for HCC. Implications for multidisciplinary treatment”, in ERC LS field line C, coordinated by prof. Dionigi from the University of Pavia. The project has been positively scored (score greater than 12/15 - Annex 1, MIUR Decree of 10.18.2013).

He is currently the principal local investigator of the national (MUR-PRIN 2020) research project, "Innovative Solutions for Renewables in Energy Communities (ISoREC)”.

He is currently the principal local investigator of the national (MUR-PRIN 2022) research project, "Towards ADDitive manufacturing of MAGnetic components for electrical machines and power converters (ADDMAG)”.

He has been the principal local investigator of the national research project (National Agricultural Research Center, CRA 2009-2014) on "Realizzazione di protocolli di propagazione di piante ornamentali in ambiente mediterraneo mediante l'utilizzo di campi magnetici stazionari o a bassa frequenza (ELF-MFS)" (Implementation of propagation protocols concerning ornamental Mediterranean plants by using static/ELF magnetic fields).

In 2004, he is local scientific co-responsible of the “Progetto Operativo Nazionale – PON on "Research, higher education and technological development", Priority II - Society of Information and Communication Technology for the Southern Scientific System.

Since 2001, he has been the principal investigator of several research projects funded by the University of Palermo.

He currently holds numerous managing responsibilities at the University of Palermo. Since 2012, he has been the director of the DEIM laboratory for Modelling and Electromagnetic Simulation - MOSEMSince 2012, he has been the chief of the Palermo research unit of the “Gruppo nazionale di coordinamento di Elettrotecnica” (National coordinating group of electrical engineering).

Since 2012, he has been the chief of the Palermo research unit of the ”Centro Interuniversitario nazionale per lo studio dell Interazioni tra Campi Elettromagnetici e Biosistemi” - ICEmB” (Italian inter-university Center for EM fields and Biosystems interactions).

Since 2014 he has been a member of the CIGRE C4 Working Group on FDTD simulations.

He is a reviewer of research projects for Italian MIUR.

He was selected in 2008, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023 from South Africa National Research Foundation (NRF) as a member of the Research Evaluation Committee.

He was a member of the CEI-81 Italian Electrotechnical Committee on Lightning Discharge, and of the CEI-106 Italian Electrotechnical Committee on Human Exposure to EM fields.

His main research interests are in the fields of computational electromagnetics (including MoM, FDTD, application of wavelets, mesh-free innovative numerical approach), electromagnetic transient analysis, lightning, electromagnetic compatibility, optimized design of EMI filters and power electronics converters, partial discharge detection, biomedical engineering (including magnetoencephalography and electroencephalography innovative modelling, and electromagnetic fields effect on humans), electrical systems design for fusion engineering, innovative solutions for sustainable mobility in the smart cities context, electrical analogies in materials viscoelasticity behavior.

He serves as a reviewer for several peer reviewed prestigious international scientific journals edited by IEEE, Wiley, Elsevier, MDPI, IET, Springer, etc.

He is IEEE Senior Member since May, 21, 2016 (Member 2002-2016). 

In 2013, he has been among the (ten) Distinguished Reviewers of the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility. IEEE Senior Member (from may 2016).

He is Associate Editor of the international scientific journal: International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields- Wiley. For the same Journal he is Guest Editor in 2017 of a Special Issue on Advances in ElectroMagnetic Compatibility (EMC) numerical modeling.

He is Editor of the international scientific journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering - Hindawi.

He has membership in various international conferences’ boards: IEEE Compumag 2025, IEEE EEEIC Milano 2017, IEEE EEEIC Firenze 2016, IEEE EEEIC Roma 2015, IEEE CEFC 2006.

He was session co-chair of the IEEE 2000 International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility (session 1D-EMC in printed circuit boards and integrated circuits I).

He was session chair: IEEE EEEIC Firenze 2016 (invited session: Wireless Charging of Electrical Vehicles); IEEE EEEIC Roma 2015 (invited session: Grounding and EMC).

He was responsible of the Technical Committe "EMC - Applications and numerical modeling: Lightning, Grounding, EMI filter design", for IEEE EEEIC Milano 2017.

He was member of the Advisory Committee in 19th IEEE Mediterranean Electrothecnical Conference, May 2-7, 2018, Marrakesh, Marocco.

He was Local co-Chair in 18th IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering (IEEE EEEIC18) e  2nd IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power System Conference EUrope (I&CPS Europe), June 12-15, 2018, Palermo, Italia.

He has been General co-Chair in 21th IEEE Mediterranean Electrothecnical Conference (IEEE MELECON 2022), June 14-16, 2022, Palermo, Italia.

During the ICRERA 2015 - 4th International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications, he received the Award for the Best Poster for the paper entitled: “Physiological compatibility of wireless chargers for electric bicycles” (DOI: 10.1109/ICRERA.2015.7418629).

During the 3rd International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility - EMC'98 ROMA, which was held in Roma (Italy) on September, 1998, he was selected from the U.R.S.I. Commissions for a Young Scientist Award.

He has authored several scientific papers in peer reviewed international scientific journals, in peer reviewed international volumes and in proceedings and abstract of international conferences, in proceedings of national conferences.
