Presentation and educational aims

Listen

Consortiumed with the University of Milan, the PhD in Gender Studies aims to promote in-depth knowledge of the condition of women by following a scientific approach that analyzes contexts and developments from a historical, geographical, social, economic and cultural point of view.

Gender studies reached the academic field fifty years ago from the feminist movement; Today the baggage of studies and research is very complex, and the analysis of the most recent problems focused on gender and its social impact have been progressively deepened according to different methodologies.

The starting point is the legal one, to be fertilized with different approaches coming from social research, which will allow both the identification of original research paths for classic topics, and to have a feedback on legal knowledge, still too resistant to perspectives opened by gender studies, as well as on the methods of social research, to build a higher specialized university education capable of innovating conceptual categories, and to design new tools of action.

The main objectives of the doctorate are the following:

  • revisit cultural, political, economic and social foundations of gender inequalities in a historical and theoretical perspective;
  • offer an articulated, critical and in-depth framework of the main researches on the field of gender studies aimed at mastering the tools and resources for scientific research in the sector;
  • evaluate and innovate the legal and political instruments - the so-called gender policies - in the current domestic and international regulatory context, with critical attention to the various sectors and their main implementations;
  • identify approaches and methods for the enhancement of interdisciplinary and plural research in gender studies, including de-colonial approaches;
  • link the results of scientific research to the elaboration of empowerment policies and strategies in a perspective open to different contexts (training, work, professional, institutional, cultural);
  • train gender balance experts for public institutions, in particular in Public administrations.
