Short Bio

Gianluca Sottile is an Associate Professor of Statistics at the Department of Economics, Business and Statistical Sciences, University of Palermo (Scientific Sector 13/D1 – Statistics). His research interests lie in methodological and computational statistics, with a particular focus on penalized models, graphical inference methods, quantile regression, and the analysis of functional and high-dimensional data. His methodological contributions are complemented by interdisciplinary applications in environmental, biomedical, and genomic contexts.

Education, Academic Titles, and Research Activities

He received his Ph.D. in Economic, Statistical, Psychological and Social Sciences (specialization in Statistics) from the University of Palermo in March 2018, with a dissertation entitled Penalized regression and clustering in high-dimensional data, and was awarded the title of Doctor Europaeus. During his doctoral studies, he carried out a research period at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, where he focused on penalized models and quantile regression methods.

He subsequently held a post-graduate research fellowship and was appointed as Assistant Professor (Researcher Type A, 2019–2022; Type B, from 2022), before his promotion to Associate Professor in the scientific-disciplinary area SECS-S/01 (Statistics).

He has been involved in several national and international research projects, including the following PRIN projects:

  • COmplex graphical Models for BIological NEtwoEk Science (COMBINERS) (since 2023), aimed at developing advanced graphical methods for biological data;

  • Big data, Internet-of-Things and aRtificial intelligence to study the impact of personal Exposure to Air pollution on asTHma Exacerbations (BREATHE) (since 2023);

  • Spatio-temporal Functional Marked Point Processes for probabilistic forecasting of earthquakes (since 2024).

Awards and Technology Transfer

He is co-inventor of the Italian patent no. 102016000104381 entitled Method for the authentication of dairy food products through the analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms, developed within research activities on the genetic authentication of agri-food products.
