Partecipazione associativa e diritti di cittadinanza: le voci dei “nuovi italiani”

Abstract

In recent years, in Italy, it has been possible to detect within the public debate an intermittent focus on the issue of the acquisition of citizenship by second generations. The processes of media framing on the subject propose different interpretative frames. Among the self-produced communication initiatives to promote a public reflection on citizenship, one should remember the campaigns (such as 'L'Italia sono anch'io' or 'Cittadinanza nero su bianco') implemented over the years by social organisations and trade unions or the actions of the online movement #ItalianiSenzaCittadinanza. Some associations in Italy were born to fight for the rights of second generations (e.g. Italeya Generazione Italo-Egiziana, Angi Associazione Nuova Generazione Italo-Cinese, or CoNNGI Coordinamento Nazionale Giovani Generazioni Italiane), others have more general aims or are linked to specific nationalities, including among their objectives the claiming of social, religious, cultural or political rights of new and old generations. Many second-generation girls and boys are members and often also play an active role in student associations. This short contribution will offer some food for thought from the voices of participants in a broader exploratory research work on the topic of second-generation youth participation.
