NICOLA CUSUMANO

Gli Eraclidi di Euripide e il trattamento del nemico tra norma e vendetta

Abstract

I would like to propose a reading of Heracles' children from the perspective of ius in bello, that is, the normative framework, both legal and moral, that governs behavior in war. This play by Euripidean allows us, in my opinion, to place the subject within the framework of democratic ideology and its rhetoric, as is also present in Thucydides' narrative and in fourth-century Attic oratory. I will then attempt to briefly summarize the success (and misfortune) of Heracles' children in the modern age, up until the significant reevaluation that has brought this work back to the center of attention in our century.
