Oreste a Roma. Fra teatro e retorica

Abstract

From Rhetorica ad Herennium and Cicero’s works until Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria and beyond, there are many retaking of the Orestes tragic history and its famous matricide. This is what confirms the well-known relevance of the theatre, in particular tragic, as a global pattern to which rhetoric and oratory frequently turn. The case of Orestes, between theatrical stage and forum from the Aeschylean Eumenides, becomes a very peculiar moment in the history of Latin eloquence: the dubious events of the young matricide will be a regular feature in all the rhetorical manuals subsequent
