Abstract
To the private nature of passions and feelings, such as compassion and pity, Arendt preferred a principle that can inspire and guide action, that is, solidarity, which she looked to as a starting point for a renewal of ethics and politics capable of restoring dignity to the idea of humanity after the horror of the twentieth-century catastrophe. Solidarity and not compassion – as documented by the correspondence with Anders – for Arendt was not only an inspiring principle for abstract theorizations, but also and above all a life practice.
