EDUCATIONAL GOALS

The doctorate aims to form qualified scholars who will be able to deal with issues of cultural heritage with rigorous methods and an integrated approach. Through comparison and a dialogue between knowledge and methods for the investigation and promotion of cultural heritage, it wants to prepare specialists ready to tackle theoretical, methodological and operational problems with the necessary competence and versatility:study of documents, evidence and artifacts, material proof of civilization from prehistory to the present world, study of historic landscapes, study of material and immaterial heritage, methodologies and communication strategies, musealisation and enhancement of heritage.

The PhD program is divided into two curricula:

  • Archeology and Historical Sciences of Antiquity, aimed at studying the material, artistic, and socio-political culture of the ancient world, with particular reference to the Mediterranean context.
  • EnhancementCommunication and Actualization of Cultural Heritage, focusing on the cultural heritage, artifacts and immaterial heritage of later ages.

Common to both curricula are the interdisciplinary approach and methodological enrichment in the areas of diagnostics, computer applications, museology, technology, and communication issues.

STUDY ACTIVITIES AT PARTNER SITES

During the 3-year course, each PhD student will have the opportunity to spend an average of 3 months at an Italian or foreign research centre, operating abroad or in Italy, taking advantage of the network of scientific and educational collaborations in which course teachers are inserted (e.g. University of Zurich, Göttingen, Murcia, Dijon, Aix-en-Provence / Marseille with the Camille Jullian Center, Nice with the Center de la Méditerranée Moderne et Contemporaine, Warsaw Academy of Sciences, Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa)

Furthermore, training projects will be planned throughout the two semesters (March-June and September-December), at the Italian Archaeological School of Athens.

EMPLOYEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The PhD program aims to train students of material and immaterial cultural heritage to master innovative and interdisciplinary methodological tools for the integrated analysis of archaeological, artistic, historical and cultural heritage and its increase in value in the territory and in today's society.

Students will combine the knowledge and possession of the necessary, multidisciplinary background skills with a solid specialized training aimed at the historical and critical framing of cultural heritage. They will learn to use the most advanced internet tools and investigation techniques, useful for research purposes,conservation, territorial planning, preventive archeology, and for the enhancement and communication of cultural heritage.

The integration of historiographic, historical-artistic, iconographic, archaeological, topographical, geographical, anthropological approaches and transversal studies concerning diagnostics and characterization, museology, semiotics and communication sciences, will orient the formation both to pure research and to research aimed at the protection, conservation, promotion and communication of archaeological, historical-documentary, art-historical, and anthropological heritage.

The objective is to train researchers, managers and qualified experts able to work in public and private structures in the cultural heritage sector.
