The Hoard of Cala Tramontana in Pantelleria (Trapani, Sicily)

Abstract

A hoard, still unpublished, was found in 2011 in the waters of Cala Tramontana, along the northeastern coast of the island of Pantelleria. It consists of over 3000 Punic bronze coins belonging to the Sardinian series with a head of Kore/horse’s head (260–240 BC). This contribution will present some reflections on the composition of the hoard and some observations on the archaeological context and on the information offered by historical sources, in order to advance interpretative hypotheses regarding the nature of the hoard and the causes of abandonment.
