Nuove evidenze sulle decorazioni di Secondo stile dalla Casa delle Maschere di Solunto

Abstract

This paper presents some groups of fragments of wall paintings from Solunto (Sicily), found during the fieldworks in 1962, when the dumps of the oldest excavations (1870s) in the large residential building known as the “House of the Masks” and the “Labyrinth-like building” were re-excavated. As part of an ongoing general study of the building, a new survey was focused on the unpublished painted plasters, aiming to understand the decorative system and their exact provenance. We suggest a reconstruction hypothesis of a Second style decoration belonging to the main (inner) wall of a rich dining room, identified with the central room of the “Pompeian” suite on the eastern terrace of the House of the Masks. The quality of the paintings is comparable with the most important coeval examples in Central Italy.
