On Preposition-Case Relation in Missionary Grammarians and Their Predecessors: Between Terminological Legacy and Innovation

Abstract

The paper aims at shedding light on the conceptualization of syntax during the early modern period, considering the first Quechua grammatical descriptions made by missionary grammarians during the second half of XVI century in South America, along with grammatical works made by their medieval and early modern predecessors. The study shows both to what extent missionary grammarians are related to and how much they differ from the Latin grammatical legacy, focusing on the analysis of their specific terminological uses.
