Waiting for the big jump! Sustainable architecture in winter sports 2031

Abstract

The project "Waiting for the Big Jump" was developed as part of the international workshop "CAMPUS Asia Plus::SUAE Asia Program Summer School Workshop 2024," held in Ramsau am Dachstein, Austria. The central theme was "Architecture and Sport: Sustainable Sports Venue Design," aiming to design new structures and services for the 2031 Nordic World Ski Championships. Ramsau am Dachstein is an alpine village located in the heart of Styria, characterized by a strong cultural and landscape identity. Its traditional architecture, utilizing local materials like wood and stone, harmoniously integrates with the mountainous landscape. The community hosts cultural and sporting events throughout the year, contributing to the promotion of sustainable tourism. The "Waiting for the Big Jump" project focuses on the ski jumping facilities, proposing a structure that addresses both the temporary needs of the event and the long-term tourism requirements. The design includes extending the existing launch ramp, installing a new rack-and-pinion lift, constructing modular pavilions made of local wood, and creating a semicircular removable grandstand. The distinctive element is the "Starthouse," an iconic building serving as an observation point and multifunctional space for athletes and visitors. The project was developed through a topographic analysis and redesign of the mountainous landscape, integrating innovative architectural solutions that respect the natural environment. The design approach aims to create flexible and sustainable spaces capable of adapting to various seasonal needs and promoting experiential and responsible tourism. The student group from the University of Palermo received the first prize for the "Waiting for the Big Jump" project, recognizing the high quality of the proposal and its innovative approach to sustainable design. The project exemplifies how architecture can contribute to enhancing the territory and promoting sustainable sporting events.
