Abstract
The essay remarks that street art has expanded from cities to small towns and rural villages. Rural street art has purposes and contents that are very different from those usual in urban street art. These differences are made clear. Rural street art is a way by which small marginal communities strengthen their identity, counter decay and depopulation, claim to survive. In these smaller towns, street art regains the social power to criticise that it got lost in the big cities, where it has often become the instrument of conformist themes.
