Abstract
Traditional religious festivals have played a central role in Italian ethnographic research since the inception of ethnoanthropology as an academic field. To this day, despite the expansion of anthropological topics, these festivals continue to be extensively examined particularly from socio-political and heritage-related perspectives. However, by rejecting the historical-comparative method, research has become less rich, often overlooking the original reasons and historical roles of holidays in communities. Through specific examples, this article argues that effective study of contemporary festivals requires not only field research and social analysis but also historical and comparative scrutiny; phenomenological approaches may also be useful for explaining religious phenomena
