Abstract

This article examines the issue of athletes’ liability for injuries caused to opponents in combat sports, where the rules of the game themselves require conduct aimed at harming an adversary’s physical integrity. The author explores the distinction between the codified rules governing competitive events and the unwritten norms generally followed during training sessions. Particular attention is given to a recent ruling by the Italian Supreme Court of Cassation, which calls for a departure from the traditional“permitted risk”doctrine
