Prof. R. Serio is being involved in the analysis of the mechanisms and the mediators involved in the interaction between the enteric nervous system and the intestinal smooth muscle cells. Recently, an experimental animal model of intestinal inflammation has been characterized in order to give a contribute for disclosing the possible role of selected enteric system in the pathophysiology of inflammation, suggesting new targets for treatment of the disease.
