Educational aims

The educational objectives of the Degree in Environmental Engineering for Sustainable Development aim at the knowledge and solution of all design and planning problems relating to the environment and the territory. Graduates in Environmental Engineering must be able to: a) analyse and interpret environmental data; b) use techniques and tools for the design of components, systems and processes aiming at the protection of the environment and the defence of soil; c) identify the areas at (chemical, industrial, geological) risk in the region with respect to the defence against natural events and human activities; d) assess the environmental compatibility of projects, also in terms of sustainability, in relation to laws in force; participate in the preparation and management of urban, territorial, and environmental plans and of plans for the utilization and fruition of reserves and nature parks. The Degree Course provides in-depth study of the issues related to the knowledge of the territory (monitoring, protection and control techniques) as well as to the pollution of the environmental compartments (monitoring, prevention, rehabilitation). This in-depth study follows the study of basic subjects and more course-specific subjects provided in the first two years of the course. In the first year, students acquire basic knowledge in core disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry, English language, computer science, and applied ecology. During the second year the course provides the knowledge related to the class-specific subjects, such as Hydraulics, Environmental Technical Physics, Cartography, and Environmental Remote Sensing. Finally, the third year focuses on Environmental Health Engineering, Construction Theory, Geotechnical Engineering, and on the Hydrology and Climatology issues ahich are deemed fundamental for the training of an environmental engineer in a climate change context. The third year also provides other educational activities as per art. 10, paragraph 5 letter d of DM 270.

Junior Environmental Engineer function in a work context: - participation in design groups for water treatment and waste management works; - participation in planning groups for soil conservation interventions; - participation in design groups of plants for the use of energy resources, with respect, in particular, to renewable and alternative sources; - assessment of the environmental compatibility of plans and projects; - conducting experiments and analysing and interpreting environmental data; - the use of techniques and methods to contribute to the design of components, systems and processes in harmony with environmental requirements; - participation in the drafting of urban and territorial plans. skills associated with the function: - drafting of design documents for artefacts and works, - monitoring and control activities of parameters and variables characterizing natural and production processes, - management of plants and the assessment of sustainability of the interventions. professional opportunities: - employment in public and private bodies, companies, professional offices, - freelance activities - planning, designing, implementing, monitoring, control and management of interventions aimed at safeguarding the environment and defending the soil. The professional activity can be exercised after passing the State Exam and enrolment in the Professional Register (Section B, sector: civil and environmental). Finally, the achievement of the degree allows access to the 2nd cycle Degree in Engineering and Innovative Technologies for the Environment, which the graduate can also attend while simultaneously carrying out their professional activity.

Characteristics of the final exam

To obtain the degree, students must have acquired 180 credits including those relating to the final examination (3 credits). The final test has the objective of assessing the level of maturity and critical skills of the undergraduate, with respect to learning and to the acquired knowledge, on completion of the activities provided by the course syllabus. The final examination consists of a written or oral test, in accordance with the rules fixed every year by the Degree Course Regulations for the final examination, respecting and consistent to the calendar, the ministerial requirements and to the relevant Guidelines of the University.
