Abstract

The main target of this paper was to compare the poem Kavkazkij plennik (1821) by A. Puskin and Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia (1830) by G. Leopardi, in order to stress the different ways to deal with two important topics of the European Romanticism: freedom and roaming. This comparison is based on the analysis of three common elements: imprisonment, space and the two heroines, i.e. the girl and the moon. As for the first element the aim was to highlight the different attitudes and reactions to imprisonment of the two heroes. The metaphoric and symbolic value of space in the two works has been investigated, such as the role played by the girl in Puskin’s poem and the moon in Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia
