STEFANO PIAZZA

Pavimenti lapidei nell’architettura siciliana di età moderna: un primo bilancio

Abstract

Since the second half of sixteenth century, the Sicilian architectural debate began to focus on the extended and technically demanding use of polychrome marble inlay on the churchly interiors. This trend, from the thirties of the 17th century, resulted in an extraordinary artistic season, characterized by a clear originality than coeval Italian experiences. This artistic phenomenon, for a long time neglected by historical historiography, is now studied and revalued. Nevertheless, in the present state of knowledge, studied focused on the application of this refined and onerous decorative technique on the church floors, are lacking. This essay proposes an exploration in that context, by way of identifying works, protagonists and aesthetic trends, to read, synchronously, with the development of the technique on the interior walls.
