What a fantastic week has just gone by for the world of Nursing in Palermo…

 

It all started with the celebration of the International Nurse Day on the 12th of May, a

symbolic yet exciting day on which this year, FNOPI (National Italian Federation of the

Nursing Professions) has scheduled the end of their tour across Italy by organising the

Congresso Itinerante Nazionale (National congress) here in Palermo at Teatro Politeama,

promoting as main object “Ovunque per il bene di Tutti”.

With the full support of UNIPA and in partnership with Ismett UPMC, OPI and FNOPI we

students actively participated at the event, taking the opportunity to promote our UNIPA

Nursing degree course while attending the Ismett demonstrative stand where fellow Ismett

nurses were showing off nursing techniques and also giving brief methodology training

sessions

Students from other courses, structured nurses, healthcare professionals and even simple

member of the public, were stopping by at our stand being attracted by demonstrations of

advanced BLS techniques and most of all by ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation)

usage and management (device that has been a pivotal asset to tackle organ failure, in

particular during the Covid - 19 pandemic)

We concluded this incredible week on Saturday 14th at Villa Filippina as we all became

“Researcher for One Day”.

Again, with the sponsorship and contribution of UNIPA and OPI, students have taken an

active role into a research project survey as part of the study program of the course held by

our teacher of “Nursing Research Methodology” of second year of Nursing 2233.

Following the agreement of an informative consent and under the deontological good

practice and Helsinki declaration regulations, the general public were taking part in a “crosssectional”

pilot study with the aim of collecting data on the frequency in mood tone

alterations (using a PHQ-9 scale) and chronic fatigue levels (using FAS scale) during the

Covid-19 pandemic time. Blood pressure screening was offered to all candidates as goodwill

reward for their time.

The overall study was a success with more than 350 surveys being compiled.

This day was such an important occasion that gave us Nursing students the chance to

approach the world of Nursing Research in “real scenarios” by applying practical skills that

we learnt during lectures.

Scheduling and organising these types of events is key and necessary in order to raise

interest and to make the general public aware about the increasingly important and central

role of the Nurse in today’s society, even in the research fields.
