Architettura

Programma formativo

Ascolta

PhD in Architectural Planning Research
PhD RESEARCH CONTEXTS

The basic study courses  to be followed for the architectural degree involve various aspects of architectural planning, at times with teaching methods and courses tending towards specific town-planning or technological contexts, and, at others, towards particular themes aimed at the functional recovery of pre-existent buildings. In this formative context, the sphere of architectural planning, circumscribed within a theoretical and practical process permeated by the study of history and by a critical awareness of reality, is of basic importance.
This process can be synthesised by means of both the “creative” and manual abilities at the basis of the complex operations involved in devising, selecting, balancing and composing the “materials”  existing within the architectural universe. It is therefore extremely important to recover the artistic experience in the procedure involved in the formation of an architectural project in order to confirm that the work produced is an adequate meaningful expression of human culture.
On the other hand, culture, or rather a variety of cultures, provide  a great many “types” of architectural and artistic creations in which there is no doubt that art is at the centre of our enormous heritage and that it can be used as a reference for contemporary architectural planning.
The intended branches of learning included in the PhD course involve the use of experiences which certainly come from the past, but which were once directly implicated in architectural production and which are evidence of the great importance represented by both art and architecture.
The theoretical and practical aspects of the PhD will be supported by planning research aimed at the definition of architectural organisms of a social and collective nature within the context of both older and more recent urban societies. These aspects will include specific themes and problems linked to the recovery of both pre-existent and recent buildings. Particular emphasis will be laid on the interpretation of the work and on the continuity and innovation of the architectural language involved.

The research themes already developed and those being developed by the PhD students basically concern four phases and four different areas of study interest.

In brief, the first phase, which started in 1994, involved the study of  The Teaching of Architectural Planning in Schools of Architecture; the second phase regarded the theme Parts, Wholes and Systems in the Construction of Architecture, the third phase involved a study of Place and Atopy in Mediterranean Architecture.
The theses presented by the XIII PhD cycle students (2001) regarded the theme Centre and Memory in Mediterranean Architecture, confirming their interest in research within the geographical and cultural context of the Mediterranean and, at the same time, in the problem of theoretical study and a variety of in-depth investigations.
For the XV cycle (2003), the specific theme was The Science of the Project for Architecture. Temporary Housing and New Styles of Urban Living.
The basic themes behind the PhD research schemes always involve the science of planning, and, in fact, the fourth phase, starting from the XVI cycle  (2004), concerns The Science of Planning in Architecture. The Restoration of Modern Buildings and New Styles of  Urban Life.
As the result of the critical and scientific relevance of the theme, and following the positive acknowledgements obtained by the doctorate degree for its commitment in this field of research, all the subsequent cycles will regard the theme of Science in Modern Restoration, which has been confirmed as the general context at the centre of all the PhD research.

L’attività all’estero è stata articolata per tutti i dottorandi in sopralluoghi, studio bibliografico, rilevamenti, acquisizioni documentarie, interviste.
