Research activity of the Department of Oncological and Stomatological Surgical Disciplines

Listen

The research activities of the Department of Oncological and Stomatological Surgical Disciplines in recent years have been of considerable scientific interest both nationally and internationally thanks to the strong interdisciplinary research matrix among the main scientific sectors (MED / 06,19,28,41, 46) belonging to the Department who have made it possible to participate in various national and regional projects for which they have received funding:

  • PON Research and Innovation 2014 - 2020: ARS01_00432 entitled Green Processes for the Extraction of active ingredients and the purification of waste and non-waste materials "
  • PRIN 2017 Call: Prot. 2017WNKSLR entitled ADIPONCOSIS: paving the road between obesity and cancer
  • PO-FESR 2014-2020: CUP: G98I18000530007 entitled BioActiFix Development and Engineering of a Medical Device for Internal Fixation with BioActive properties.
  • PO-FESR 2014-2020: CUP: G78I18000860007 entitled OngOIng - Omics for Innovative Oncology, an innovative service for the diagnosis and treatment of oncological pathologies based on advanced technologies for genomics and the use of decision support systems
  • PO-FESR 2014-2020: 3DLab Sicily Creation of a regional network for the provision of "smart" services based on advanced display technologies CUP: G69J18001100007

As part of the Research activity concerning these Projects, the role of adipose tissue in the progression of breast cancer and colorectal cancer, the possibility of creating orthopedic devices for the treatment of bone fractures, the use of technologies were studied advanced genomics and decision support in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases as well as the creation of sustainable regional liquid lab networks capable of exploiting ICT services and solutions to accelerate innovation processes.
The Department also has two research projects funded through PON Research and Innovation 2014-2020 - AIM call.

The main research activities of the Department can be differentiated on the basis of the issues addressed by the various scientific disciplinary sectors, which - in broad terms - exactly intercept the name of the department, therefore surgery, oncology and stomatological sciences.

The Department has n. 3 Research Laboratories, specialized in Molecular Genetics and Oncology, Cellular and Molecular Physiopathology, Regenerative Medicine and Plastic Surgery. The highly qualified staff and the specific equipment available make it possible to develop research activities of excellence and to provide targeted services with high technological content:

  1. Cellular and Molecular Pathophysiology (head Prof. G. Stassi)
  2. Molecular Genetics Laboratory (head Prof. A. Russo)
  3. BIOPLAST- Laboratory of BIOlogy and regenerative medicine - PLASTic surgery (head prof. Adriana Cordova)

Under the guidance of MED / 06, MED / 46, MED / 19 and MED / 28, numerous project lines have been defined in the field of regenerative medicine, omics sciences and translational oncology which, with the support of new systems able to use artificial intelligence, are able to improve the diagnosis and treatment pathways of chronic patients, with particular reference to oncology, through a new approach based on the personalization of treatments and on the search for genomic biomarkers of prognostic significance and / or predictive of response to new innovative drugs with the aim of optimizing clinical benefits and healthcare costs. As proof of this, the recent experience linked to the COVID-19 pandemic has also made it possible to use new reliable and economic technologies capable of allowing televised and teleconsultations with patients and among health professionals themselves, limiting unnecessary access to the hospital and facilitating also the interactions between colleagues.
The Department registered, in the 2015 PRIN round, the funding of n. 1 PRIN (with 2 Scientific Units in the Department of the MED / 18 SSD) the presentation of 1 PRIN (with a teacher from the national coordinating Department; not funded, score 13/15; MED / 50 SSD), 4 PRIN non-funded (with professor from the Department in charge of Units) and various participation of teachers in other PRIN propositions, a Horizon 2020 proposition (MED / 50) and a COST EU project (BIO / 13). The results of the 2019 PRINs presented by the Department's SSDs (uploaded on IRIS) are awaited.
