Following graduation from the Medical School of the University of Palermo, from 1980 to 1986, Nicola Gebbia was Assistant Professor of Chemotherapy and since 1986 has been Full Professor of Chemotherapy of the University of Palermo. In 2002 he was appointed Full Professor of Medical Oncology. Since 1992 he has been head of the Service of Chemotherapy and Clinical Sensitivity to Antiblastic Drugs at the Policlinico of Palermo.

He has a vast, long-term experience in the study and treatment of solid tumours, both from the clinical and from the biological point of view. The research conducted by Nicola Gebbia has not only partly involved the treatment of solid neoplasias, with studies of Phase I, II and III, but has also involved the field of clinical research, where his group has been concerned with the biomolecular classification of several solid tumours (gastrointestinal, breast, head and neck, urogenital apparatus).

He is currently studying, in fact, indices of progression and aggressiveness such as cell DNA content and proliferative activity, also identifying the structural alterations within several oncogenes (c-myc, ki-ras2) and oncosuppressors (p53, p16).

His clinical oncology research is mainly directed towards the identification of diagnostic and prognostic biomolecular indicators and those regarding treatment response, particularly with reference to the resistance mechanisms to 5-FU.

Nicola Gebbia is, furthermore, Head of "The Regional Centre for Biological Characterization of Neoplasias, for Genetic Screening of Hereditary Tumours and Biological Bank", which is concerned with hereditary tumors and familiar syndromes, above all in families at risk for gastrointestinal and breast carcinomas. A great many papers regarding this research have been published in several international journals. Professor Gebbia has also published more than 170 articles mostly concerning clinical and experimental oncology.
